A side table mod. 592, designed by Wilhelm Schmidt in around 1903, - Design

manufactured by Prag-Rudniker wickerwork factory, Vienna, four-legged structure with runner-shaped lower end made of solid dark varnished elm, replaced table top covering. Dimensions height c. 77.5 cm, width c. 60 cm, depth c. 40 cm. Signs of age and use, scratches and abrasions, isolated minor chipping, inner table top covering and lacquer replaced a long time ago. This piece of furniture comes from a row house on Melchartgasse in Vienna’s 13th district. The house was part of the ‘Ostmark’ garden city settlement planned by the architects Heinrich Schmid and Hermann Aichinger in 1912/1913. Both architects have studied with Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and, like many of their fellow students, diverged considerably from their mentor in their own designs.
