A dainty writing desk, second quarter of the 20th century, - Design

six-legged construction made of black painted wood, the front with drawer and door, dimensions: height c. 77 cm, width c. 105 cm, depth c. 62 cm. Signs of age and use, scratches and abrasions, partly slightly chipped, table top insert replaced a long time ago. (MHA)

This piece of furniture comes from a row house on Melchartgasse in Vienna’s 13th district. The house was part of the ‘Ostmark’ garden city settlement planned by the architects Heinrich Schmid and Hermann Aichinger in 1912/1913. Both architects have studied with Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and, like many of their fellow students, diverged considerably from their mentor in their own designs.

Formerly part of the furnishings of Heidrich House on Melchartgasse in Vienna’s 13th district.
