This biscuit jar represents Vienna’s City Hall as one of the great buildings of the 19th century in the Habsburg capital. It is part of a series of public monumental buildings, which were erected in the style of Historicism along the then newly constructed boulevard (Ringstrasse) and still characterize the cityscape today. The “Beauty” exhibition featured three of these biscuit jars in different forms: besides the City Hall, there were also the Parliament and the Opera House as a representative educational institution. The jars were used to distribute sweets to visitors of the exhibition. The “Opera House” biscuit jar remained in the artist’s possession.
