Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn - Master Drawings and Prints until 1900

(Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam)
The Windmill, 1641, etching with traces of drypoint, on laid paper, signed and dated Rembrandt f 1641. in the plate, 14,5 x 20,8 cm, trimmed along platemarks, a narrow margin at lower platemark, Bartsch 233, White-Boon 233, Nowell-Usticke 233, New Hollstein 200 (only state), mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Private collection, Italy.

Very excellent, even and slightly tonal impression on a delicately structured laid paper. With the fine craquelures in the sky described by Nowell-Usticke for the early states of the print and the grainy sulphur tone at the left of the mill. Minutely browned, a little brownish at the left margin next to the mill. A minor repair in the sky at the right. Otherwise in an excellent condition. According to Seidlitz ”in fragrance and delicacy presumably the most beautiful landscape by the master.”
