Baldessare Franceschini - Master Drawings and Prints until 1900

called Volterrano (Volterra 1611-1689 Florence)
Drapery study, red and white chalk, on greyish laid paper, framing lines in pen and brown ink, sketch of a male figure on the reverse, 21 x 16,5 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Collection Filippo Baldinucci (1624-1697);
Private collection, Italy.

The present drawing with a drapery study prepared the figure of Evangelist John in the painting “Madonna with child and saints” (1655) by Volterrano which is kept in the Pinacoteca di Volterra (Inv. 53) today.

The framing lines in pen and brown ink indicate that the sheet was once in the collection of Filippo Baldinucci (1624-1697), who was the biographer of Volterrano. For the painting see: M. C. Fabbri, A. Grassi, R. Spinelli, Volterrano. Baldassare Franeschini (1611-1690), 2013, pp. 193-196.

We are grateful to Prof. Maria Cecilia Fabbri for confirming the attribution and for the scientific support.
