Auguste Etienne François Mayer was born in Brest, in Brittany, France. He showed his first oil painting at the Paris Salon in 1824, where he would be a regular exhibitor for the next forty years. He specialised in naval battle scenes and participated in several Artic expeditions. He travelled extensively to Turkey and Egypt with the French artist Adrien Dauzats and the superintendent of the French government Baron Taylor (1789-1879). Mayer was appointed professor and taught drawing at the École Navale. He died in Brest in 1890.

The present lot depicts a view of the Bosphorus in Istanbul at sunset. The Ortaköy mosque on the left was commissioned by Sultan Abdülmecid I (1823-1861). Its construction was completed around 1854.
A burial ground with Ottoman gravestones is visible in the foreground.There are various ships and vessels carrying people between the Eastern and Western shores of the Bosphorus, with the Blue Mosque able to be seen in the distance.
