Frederik-August Graf zu Rantzau was born in Kiel on 12 October 1895, the only child of Ernst Graf zu Rantzau (1869-1930) and his wife Carmelita, née Countess von Noer (1871-1948). His father, an art collector, was Imperial Privy Councillor (Geheime Regierungsrat) and Chamberlain (Kämmerer) at the time the present portrait was painted in Potsdam while de László was making portraits of the Emperor Wilhelm, the Empress Auguste Victoria, Crown Prince Wilhelm and Crown Princess Cecilie. His parents divorced in 1916. He died as a prisoner-of-war in the Russian Caucasus in December 1945.
