Vincenzo Caprile

Vincenzo Caprile - 19th Century Paintings

(Naples 1856–1936)
A Market Scene in Naples, signed V. Caprile Napoli, oil on canvas, 100 x 150 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection, Germany.

Vincenzo Caprile began his artistic career as a student of the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples, where he studied under Gabriele Smargiassi (1798–1882) and Domenico Morelli (1823–1901). The present scene is infused with movement and dynamism and provides an example of the artist’s exceptional talent for capturing scenes from everyday life. The central figure, a young mother selling oranges, tenderly holds her child in her arms amidst the market bustle. Here, Caprile masterfully renders the colourful clothing and picturesque ambience of the southern market.

Caprile enjoyed great success during his lifetime and took part in several national and international exhibitions. He debuted at the Promotrice di Belle Arti in 1873 and achieved public acclaim in the IV Esposizione Nazionale di Belle Arti of 1880 in Turin. After this breakthrough, his paintings were widely exhibited internationally, including in Berlin, London, St. Petersburg, Paris, and Buenos Aires. He later became the official portraitist of the house of Savoy in 1911.
