A Gothic Pietà,
![A Gothic Pietà, - Furniture, Works of Art, Glass & Porcelain A Gothic Pietà, - Furniture, Works of Art, Glass & Porcelain](/fileadmin/lot-images/37X230502/normal/schoenes-vesperbild-gotische-pieta-8511079.jpg)
Salzburg, c. 1400, Saint Mary enthroned on a bench decorated with tracery, holding the body of Christ on her lap, fired clay with coarse sediment admixtures, exquisitely modelled, residual traces of former polychromy, height 65 cm, age-related damage, some parts missing, (MC)
Literature:
Hubert Wilm, Gotische Tonplastik in Deutschland, Augsburg 1929, ill. 26;
The present Pietà shows stylistic similarities to large Pietà from Admont. Like the latter, it is older than Hubert Wilm suggests (1420-30), and can be dated as early as 1400. Wilm describes the material of the Pietà as stone or cement cast, probably because of its granular surface due to the sediment admixtures of the clay. However, on closer inspection, typical traces of modelling tools are detectable, nor would a stone or cement cast be so thin-walled.
