Note:
Preparatory drawing made ca. 1937 – 1938, for “L’Age d’Or (Le Paradis Terrestre, La Chasse)” in the collections of the MNAM, Centre Pompidou, Paris, which is the largest painting Derain made in his entire career. In the preparatory drawing, there are 11 naked hunters like ancient heroes and animals: bird, lion and club, deer and doe, squirrel, rabbit, ... In the final painting, Derain reduced his composition to only 4 characters, 3 of which are dressed in animal skins, and 5 wild animals.
