Salvatore Mangione (Leonforte, 1947 – Turin, 2015), better known as Salvo, was an Italian artist famous for his dreamscapes strongly marked by the themes of memory and dreams. His works are known for giving the viewer a sense of gratification. Many define his art as “democratic” as it is able to reach everyone, courtesy of its simple geometric shapes and saturated, vibrant colours that render nature in all its magnificence.
The artist displays an obsession with the subjects that he depicts in all his artistic research, but, at the same time, he is able to show innovation thanks to his love of a landscape that is filtered through his emotions. This is why it is perhaps limiting to define him as an artist for all; rather, it is more correct to define him as an artist who manages to reach everyone.
“Primavera” from 2006 is certainly representative of his naïve painting, but never elementary; a painting that reconsiders nature with great dignity and does so through light that, as Salvo himself said, “is always between sunset and sunrise”. Salvo was a painter of places, an insatiable traveller within nature, a creator of intact and changing landscapes so significant in the Italian art historical panorama that he can be defined as one of the major protagonists of the contemporary art scene.
