first quarter of the 20th century, four-legged structure with runner-shaped lower end made of solid, slightly stained elm, polished finish, repaired wickerwork design. Dimensions: height c. 76.5 cm, width c. 57 cm, depth c. 38 cm. Signs of age and use, scratches and abrasions, isolated minor chipping.
This piece of furniture comes from a row house on Melchartgasse in Vienna’s 13th district. The house was part of the ‘Ostmark’ garden city settlement planned by the architects Heinrich Schmid and Hermann Aichinger in 1912/1913. Both architects had studied with Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and, like many of their fellow students, diverged considerably from their mentor in their own designs. This model differs by only a few details from model 592, which Wilhelm Schmidt designed in 1903 for the Prag-Rudniker wickerwork factory in Vienna.
Provenance:
Formerly part of the furnishings of Heidrich House on Melchartgasse in Vienna’s 13th district.
