DRC. Wood, pigments, calabash/gourd, plant fibers, raffia, 110 cm high. These impressive maks were used in a small region in the forest and savanna between the Kwango River and the Wamba River, southwestern DRC. The dramatically painted kakungu mask was worn by the leader of the initiation rite and represents a gaunt face with exaggerated nose and cheeks. This mask is thought to embody terrific powers and is kept in its own hut. (VJ)

Collection Catherine & Patrick Sargos, Nancy, France. AHDRC Object ao-0125030-001 Similar in style to the one collected by Pères Jésuites, Louvain-Heverlee and exhibited in the Musee Dapper in 2010.
