155 cm high. These ancestral shields were used as war shields and are the most powerful symbolic element of a warrior's equipment with many layers of meaning. The red ochres refer to the blood of the ancestors as well as the earth, the white to ashes and mourning. The carved and painted images on the surface of the shields were intended to show lineage, frighten the enemy and symbolize the power of the ancestors. (VJ)
