An early small Gope board, - Tribal Art

Papua New Guinea. Wood, 56 cm high. As very sacred objects, these whistle boards were called Imunu Viki, literally spirits weeping. They were kept hidden and only used by the highest members of secret societies when a chief died. (VJ)
