designed and manufactured by Prof. Josef Schulz in around 1970, abstract depiction with polychrome colour scheme, wool, verso with handwritten dedication ‚Mit großer Dankbarkeit Ihr J. Schulz‘. Dimensions c. 70 x 100 cm. Signs of age and use. (MHA)

Josef Schulz (1933-2005) was an Austrian artist, painter, graphic designer, textile designer and university lecturer. He was a professor of Textile Design and Works and former head of the Master School of Tapestry at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. “Josef Schulz graduated from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna with Prof. Wimmer-Wisgrill “Textiles and Painting”, then worked freelance and as a teacher at the University of Applied Arts, before being appointed to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1975. He was instrumental both in establishing the Institute for Textile Design as part of the training for art teachers, and in founding the Master School of Tapestry, which he directed from 1988 until his retirement in 2002. Schulz was a holder of the Grand Silver Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria and the Cross of Honour for Science and Art 1st Class, the holder of a Silver Commander’s Cross of the Province of Lower Austria as well as numerous awards.
