Russell Schweickart (Apollo 9)
David Scott in the open hatch of the CSM Gumdrop docked to the LM Spider in Earth orbit during the first US two-man EVA, 3-13 March 1969
Vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based paper, printed 1969, numbered "NASA AS9-20-3064" (NASA MSC) in red in top margin, with "A KODAK PAPER" watermark on verso, 25,4 x 20,3 cm
A very famous photograph of the first EVA of the Apollo program, featuring a simultaneous EVA by Russell Schweickart who took the photograph from outside of the LM Spider and a stand-up EVA by David Scott in the open hatch of the CSM Gumdrop as the two spacecraft were docked together in Earth orbit
The first two-man EVA was performed two months before by cosmonauts Khrunov and Yeliseyev, who conducted a spacecraft transfer from Soyuz 5 to Soyuz 4 in January 1969.
Schweickart shot this photograph as he was spacewalking with his feet in Golden Slippers on the porch of Spider. In the open hatch of Gumdrop Scott is also taking photographs with his Hasselblad.
“I took this shot of Dave Scott taking a picture of me at the beginning of my EVA on Apollo 9. It captures just a bit of the fantastic beauty of the Earth juxtaposed against the infinite black of space. In the foreground is that amazing combination of human and machine that is enabling us to emerge into the universe out of the womb of Earth.”
Russell Schweickart (Jacobs, p. 42)
