Lot No. 119

Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11)

LM Eagle at Tranquility Base, the first human spacecraft on the surface of another world, 16-24 July 1969

Vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based paper, printed 1969, numbered "NASA AS11-40-5922" (NASA MSC) in red in top margin, with "A KODAK PAPER" watermark on verso, 20,3 x 25,4 cm

While inspecting the LM to evaluate the effects of the landing, Buzz Aldrin took this superb close up of Eagle showing great detail of the ascent stage that would later return them to lunar orbit to rendezvous with the CSM Columbia for the journey back to Earth.
On one of Eagle’s landing legs, the first moonwalkers left a plaque bearing the inscription “Here men from the Planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon, July, 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.”

“Nothing can replace the pictures that were taken on the first visit to the lunar surface. Those are always going to stand out.”
