Lot No. 162

J. Lovell, J. Swigert or F. Haise (Apollo 13)

Lost Moon in the dark void of space, as seen during the perilous homeward journey, 11-17 April 1970

Vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based paper, printed 1970, numbered "NASA AS13-62-8963" (NASA MSC) in red in top margin, with "A KODAK PAPER" watermark on verso, 25,4 x 20,3 cm

As the spacecraft was in “barbecue mode” and the crew plunged into darkness inside the LM cabin not knowing if they would survive, Swigert and Haise took pictures on their own documenting their hazardous journey in space.
This superb photograph of the Moon was taken with the lunar surface Hasselblad Data Camera equipped with a 60mm lens and color magazine 62/JJ.

“I never felt we were in a hopeless situation… No, we never had that emotion at all. We never were with our backs to the wall, where there were no more ideas, or nothing else to try, or no possible solution. That never came.”
Fred Haise (Chaikin, Voices, pg. 139)
