[NASA caption] … NASA's sixth and final manned lunar landing mission in the Apollo program concluded with a splashdown et 2:25 P.M. EST December 19, 1972, 648 kilometers (350 nautical miles) southeast of American Samoa.
Following splashdown, the three-man crew were picked up by helicopter and flown to the deck of the recovery ship “USS Ticonderoga”, triumphantly closing the voyage to the Moon and back initiated by President Kennedy a little more than a decade earlier.
It had been, as National Geographic called it, “man’s greatest adventure”.
