Sketch book with various studies, including views of Rome (a.o. Colosseum, view of Tiber river, the Gardens of Sallust, the aqueduct near Villa Borghese, St. Peter’s church, Basilica of St. John Lateran, Tomb of Caius Sextus), view of Vienna, Prater, surrounding of Mödling, Brühl, Liechtenstein, various techniques, watercolour on paper, grisaille-watercolour on paper, pencil on paper, different dimensions, 26 x 38 cm and smaller, the book with an index, all studies no longer existent, partly browned, stained, individual sheets loose, bound in book, damaged, worn, 31 x 40,5 x 5,5 cm, about 121 pieces, (BH)

The album was compiled by Jackson’s son after he had moved to Vienna in 1812. It comprises sketches of a journey, which William Jackson made in 1777, and also sketches by Thomas Jackson who completed the album on his travels through Europe. According to the index, the album also contained drawings by Gainsborough, Veronese und Claude, which were removed after the death of Thomas.

William Jackson of Exeter was a musician, painter and writer. He also was of the best friend of Thomas Gainsborough between the years of their first encounter and the beginning of the 1780s. Gainsborough got help from Jackson with his musical problems who in turn received advice in drawing.
