Lot No. 268

Hans Makart

(Salzburg 1840-1884 Vienna)
"Gasthof zum Goldenen Schiff" (tavern), cartouche, titled, signed and dated with Roman numerals Hans Makart MDCCLIX, pencil, watercolour on firm paper laid down on cardboard, 15 x 11,5 cm, in the form of a cartouche, mounted, framed, (BH)

The present sheet is a work by the young Hans Makart, who was to become famous later. Makart stayed in Salzburg in the years 1858 and 1859. Probably due to the influence of his uncle, who dealt with heraldry and ornamental paintings on diplomas and the like, the young artist expressed the wish to become an engraver. This resulted in some carefully executed small-format drawings including coats of arms, architectural details, landscape and tree studies. A design for the title page of a songbook or for the admission ticket of a Salzburg museum are probably among his first works. Some of these early drawings are kept in the Salzburg Landesmuseum. In Salzburg was a tavern called "Zum Goldenen Schiff" on Residenzplatz. However, it remains difficult to determine whether the present sheet may actually be a depiction of this inn. In any case, it could be a design for a house sign or similar.
