Richard Friese received a formation as a lithographer. From 1877 to 1881 he was a student at the Academy in Berlin. In addition, he received private lessons in the studios of Paul Meyerheim und Karl Steffeck. In Berlin he opened his own studio and in 1892 he was appointed to the Prussian Academy of the arts. In 1897 Friese received a large gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. He made trips to Syria, Palestine, Norway, Spitzbergen and Canada.
