The present drawing’s composition of the head of a young man in half figure gazing upwards to the left is related to a painting by Pietro Perugino showing a “Saint Sebastian” in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg (Inv. 281) The copy was presumably executed directly after the painting and may derive from an artist of the early 18th century, who copied the painting for study purposes during his artistic formation. The watermark with the “letters AIR in a cartouche” is also datable to this period.
