Lot No. 129

Baldessare Franceschini called il Volterrano

(Volterra 1611-1689 Florence)
Drapery study, red and white chalk, on grey laid paper, framing lines in pen and brown ink, a male figure sketch on the reverse, 21 x 16,5 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Collection Filippo Baldinucci (1624-1697);
Private collection, Italy.

The present drawing of a drapery sketch was created in preparation of the figure of the Evangelist John in Volterrano’s painting "Madonna with child and saints" (1655), which is kept in the Pinacoteca di Volterra (Inv. 53). The framing lines in pen and brown ink point to the drawing’s former provenance in the collection of Filippo Baldinucci (1624-1697), who was the biographer of the artist. For the painting see: M. C. Fabbri, A. Grassi, R. Spinelli, Volterrano. Baldassare Franeschini (1611-1690), 2013, pp. 193-196.

We are grateful to Prof. Maria Cecilia Fabbri for the confirmation of the attribution and the scientific research.
