By inheritance - Private Collection, Belgium.

The Dutch genre painter Jozef Israëls was born in Groningen. He trained first with Jan Adam Kruseman and then at the Amsterdam Academy under Jan Willem Pieneman. He travelled to Paris where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. After staying at the Dutch coastal village of Zandvoort in 1855 for health reasons he decided to become a painter of genre scenes. He was indeed deeply moved by the simple life of the people. He painted peasants, the fishermen at work and their families. These humble scenes earned him international fame.
Artists such as Vincent van Gogh were great admirers of his work.

The present painting depicts an interior with a family at prayer before meals. It shows their daily lives which became an important source of inspiration for the artist. He focused on the familial aspect of the scene. Critics of the time compared the warm colors and the use of chiaroscuro with the work of Rembrandt.
