Richard E. Miller studied at the Saint Louis School of Fine Arts in Washington in the 1890s. A scholarship in 1899 enabled him to travel to Paris, where he enrolled at the Académie Julian and studied under French artists Benjamin Constant and Jean Paul Laurens. During his fifteen-year stay in Paris he became an accomplished painter of young women in informal domestic settings. Miller spent his summers in Giverny with other American artists such as Frederick Carl Frieseke who rented a house adjacent to Monet’s property. He gave summer lessons there to American students. Miller’s consistently preferred subject matter was the female figure, most often placed in an intimate domestic setting. He painted large canvases for selling at exhibitions as well as smaller and more intimate works such as the present lot. Bedtime routine was one of the three paintings exhibited at the Seventh International Exhibition in Venice in 1907.
