The Young Seamstresses, signed, dated F. Guiguet 1903, oil on canvas, 74 x 60 cm, framed

Provenance:
European Private Collection.

François Guiguet is a painter of childhood, women, and their daily lives. He excelled in the art of depicting youth, capturing the spontaneity of his models. His primary source of inspiration was his own family. He depicted his family continuously, from his time growing up in Corbelin, a hamlet in the Dauphiné countryside, right until the end of his life. François-Auguste Ravier (1814-1895), a landscape painter from Lyon who lived in Morestel near Coberlin, was his first teacher. He then entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he studied under Michel Dumas, a former pupil of Ingres. In 1882, he won the Prix de Paris and joined Alexandre Cabanel’s studio, where he befriended artists such as Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and Edgar Degas. He debuted at the Salon in 1885. He regularly sent works to exhibitions abroad: Pittsburgh in the United States, England, Germany, and the island of Reunion.
