Claude Michel, called Clodion, was an important French sculptor of the Louis XVI epoch. He spent 11 years in Rome making copies of ancient statuettes, working, among others, for the Duke de La Rochefoucauld and Catherine the Great. When he returned to Paris in 1771, he was already a very well-known sculptor. From 1779 onwards, he regularly received commissions from Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. His favourite materials were marble and terracotta. His works, especially putti, nymphs and girls became popular models for bronze-doré artists in the 19th century.
