From 1920 on Lois Pregartbauer studied at the Vienna Technical University and at the Vienna School of Applied Arts with Oskar Strnad, and was a private pupil of Erich Wagner and Remigius Geyling. From 1931–1938 he was a member of the Hagenbund, a member of the Vienna Secession, and the Vienna Künstlerhaus.
In 1937 Lois Pregartbauer became part of the founding collective for the art magazine Plan, which was banned in 1938 and reappeared in 1945.
