Erro (Gudmundur Gudmundsson) *
(born in Olafsvik/Island in 1932, lives and works since 1958 in Paris)
Gunpoint, 2009, titled, signed, dated on the reverse Erro 2009, acrylic on canvas, 195 x 130 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private Collection North Rhine-Westphalia
The Icelandic painter Gudmundur Gudmundsson, better known as Erró, is known for his collage-like works, his unmistakably striking use of colour and his unique, often critically narrative, style. The characteristic pairing of surrealist moments with American Pop Art in his oeuvre stems from his travels through the USA and the interactions he had there with renowned artists such as Warhol and Lichtenstein. His works draw on references to comics, art history and science fiction, are socially critical and humorous as well as moral and cryptic. Comic figures cross paths with historical figures in his pieces – peppered with countless quotations from art history. Despite his penchant for major socio-critical themes and their modern implementation, Erró considers himself to be very classical, reflects deeply on the composition of a work and admires the greats like Rubens and Tintoretto.
