Bordjalou, Southwest Caucasus, c. 221 x 152 cm,
19th century. The specific feature of these archaic rustic carpets from the villages of Bordjalou and Chobanker, south of Tbilisi, is their wide border, which is dominated by a bright zigzag band with hooks. The deep red central field of this wonderful specimen, decorated with three hooked rhombi, radiates great tranquillity and, like the rest of the carpet, is embellished with archaic ‘shou’ symbols and graceful decorative motifs. Several traces of usage and partly trimmed pile, completely preserved in original condition.
