Lot No. 105

Bolognese School, early 18th Century

Bolognese School, early 18th Century - Old Master Paintings

Cleopatra,
oil on canvas, 113 x 152 cm, framed

The two putti flanking the oval are reminiscent of those in the frescos by Carlo Cignani in the church of San Michele in Bosco, Bologna (1665). Particularly the putti next to the archangel Michael, who appears to Gregory the Great, reveal strong resemblances (see B. Buscaroli Fabbri, Carlo Cignani, Affreschi, dipinti, disegni, Milan 2004, p. 117, no. 96). A preliminary drawing for these frescoes has survived (published by Buscaroli Fabbri, op. cit, p. 224, no. 100a, today’s whereabouts unknown, formerly Truro Museum, Cornwall).
