Marijke de Kinkelder of the RKD, The Hague, has endorsed the present painting as an autograph work by de Hooch on the basis of a photograph. Following a stay in Rome, Carel Cornelisz. de Hooch was admitted to the Utrecht Guild of Saint Luke in 1633. He had specialised in landscapes with ruins, grottos, and catacombs in the surroundings of Rome. According to Walther Bernt, his pictures, besides their Flemish orientation, betray a strong Dutch realism.
