A set comprising flower studies, including lady’s-slipper orchid, windflower, jasmine, primroses, lilac blossoms and fruit blossoms, inscribed Jos. Schuster for the most part on the reverse, various techniques, watercolor on paper, oil on brown paper, various formats, from 12 x 12,4 cm to 39,5 x 27 cm, partly mounted, unframed, (16) (BH)

Professor Dr. Josef Weese (1888-1962);

In his childhood Josef Schuster and his family moved to Vienna. His father was a confectioner in the household of Duke Liechtenstein who supported Schuster and made it possible for him to attend the Vienna Academy. Schuster’s teachers were Joseph Mössmer, Sebastian Wegmayer and Franz Xaver Pieler. On the suggestion of Archduke John he discovered the world of Alpine flowers as an artistic theme for himself. He enjoyed great success among the nobility and a bourgeois audience; his flower pictures were sold all over the world
