Lot No. 997

Attributed to Giovanni Giuliani (1664 – 1744), Large St. Mary Magdalene c. 1700,

Mary Magdalene kneeling (originally under a cross), holding a cloth to her face in a gesture of mourning, carved limewood, hollowed out on the backe, traces of former paint, 54 x 106 cm, age-related damage, some parts missing, (MC)

Lit.:
Luigi A. Ronzoni, ed. Johann Kräftner, Giovanni Giuliani, exhibition catalogue of the Lichtenstein Museum 2005;

The pleated style of our Mary Magdalene, for example, is easily comparable with the grieving Mary from 1695 cat. no. 159 ill. p. 287, which also displays a very similar emphasis on her long upper body.
