A Lidded Tureen with Galatea from the “Swan Service”, Meissen 20th Century


porcelain, polychromed and gilt, figural lidded tureen with sculptural dolphins, putti and swans, two Nereids as handles on both sides, the lid featuring Galatea and Cupid on a dolphin, height 43 cm, model by Johann Joachim Kaendler and Johann Friedrich Eberlein c. 1738, underglaze blue crossed swords mark, minor restorations, (GO)

The Brühl Swan Service was created by Johann Joachim Kaendler, with the support of Johann Friedrich Eberlein, from 1737 onwards. It is one of the most important and, with more than 2,000 different individual pieces, also one of the most extensive porcelain services ever made. Kändler's patron was the statesman Heinrich Count von Brühl, the most important supporter of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory after the King of Saxony. His alliance coat of arms with Maria Anna Franziska Countess von Kolowrat-Krakowsky adorns the central cartouche.
