Franz Barwig (Schönau, Moravia 1868-1931 Vienna), a tiled stove, designed in around 1913, executed by Sommerhuber, Steyr. The tiled stove was originally located in Villa Barwig, Hockegasse no. 92, 1180 Vienna.


ceramic, glazed green; the relief contours slightly brownish translucent; lower part with square tiles in three rows; relief decoration in round medallions: Gretchen at the spinning wheel, parrots, putto riding a centaur or stag; the upper corners with sculptural ape motifs; hexadecagonal top element with upright rectangular tiles in two rows with figural motifs between grapevines; height: 160 cm, width and depth: 102 cm. (MP) The stove had a brick base approx. 56 cm high. Provenance: Franz Barwig the Elder (1868-1931), Vienna; Private Collection Austria; Dorotheum Vienna, 18 April 1994, lot 120; Erich Welt (1928-2006), Vienna, by inheritance to the current owner - Private Collection Vienna. Literature: Max Eisler, Österreichische Werkkultur, Vienna 1916, p. 159. The archive photo shows the original location of the stove in the entrance hall of the Barwig house. It was later taken down and put up again in the studio.
