Lot No. 264

Johann Salomon Wahl (Chemnitz 1689 - 1765 Copenhagen) - Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736),

portrait of the Prince in armour, on the side a bridge and battle turmoil, oil on canvas, 142 x 107 cm, inscribed on the reverse: "Wahl. Pinxit a Hamburg 1726", framed ,(Lu)

A superb depiction of Prince Eugene as a general. The depiction of the battle most probably refers to the Battle of Zenta in 1697 against the Turkish troops, even though the scene features a stone bridge instead of a pontoon bridge as in the historical battle. This bridge was the focal point of the fighting, which is probably why the artist chose to emphasise. Prince Eugene also appears slightly younger in comparison to the other portraits painted after his successes at Petrovaradin (1716) and Belgrade (1717). The Danish court painter Johann Salomon Wahl was probably commissioned to depict the younger Prince Eugene at the Battle of Zenta.
