Lot No. 23

Ferdinand Andri *

(Waidhofen a. d. Ybbs 18711956 Vienna)
“Bauern auf dem Kirchgang”, 1899, lithograph on ochre coloured lightweight cardboard, reworked with black chalk and opaque white, monogrammed and dated in the plate, image size 37.7x 49.8 cm, sheet size 48.7 x 63.7 cm, vertical and diagonal crease across the image, margin with further creases and traces of usage, (RAC)

Extremely rare. The present lithograph is an earlier version of the motif, created during the artistic working process. The final version was printed as a coloured lithograph and appeared within the 4th series of supplements to the so-called ‘Gründerausgabe’ of ‘Ver Sacrum’, second volume 1899. In contrast to the final version, the present lithograph is executed in a horizontal format. The group of peasant women shows an additional figure on the left, the peasant woman in the foreground is even further away from the right edge of the depiction. The horizon is higher, the farmers’ hats rise only slightly above it. The design of the dresses in this lithograph is also more sophisticated, the folds more detailed.
