Lot No. 47

Broncia Koller-Pinell

(Sanok/Galicia 1863–1934 Vienna)
“Alte Dächer - Freihaus”, colour woodcut on thin Japan paper, monogrammed in the block, sheet sized print 21.2 x 29.4 cm, Baumgartner Gr/H 15, (RAC)

Very rare. One of the few block prints by this female artist from Gustav Klimt's circle, whose graphic work has become known mainly in posthumous reprints, above all in the 1976 Tusch edition. The woodcut with the same title that appears in the posthumous editions is actually a variant of the present woodcut and was printed from a completely different block probably at a later date. The present woodcut is more detailed and differentiated in its overall cut. In the foreground in particular, the artist achieves a greater richness of detail. Another example of this woodcut is preserved in the Wien Museum (inv. no. 15.049).

Exhibited and Literature:
“Klimt und Freunde”, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen 2021, catalogue no. 122, ill. p. 354
