World record prices: more than € 1 million for Albin Egger-Lienz and € 965,300 for Alfons Walde

Dorotheum started off with two world record prices at the auction of Modern Art on 22 June 2021, which became the most successful sale in the history of the auction house. 1,031,930 euros for a ‘Totentanz’ (dance macabre), Albin Egger-Lienz’ key motif, represent the highest price to date for a work by this Tyrolean artist. This painting with an anti-war theme comes from a US private collection and has never been offered in the art market before. It originally belonged to the celebrated German opera star Elisabeth Rethberg, who brought it to her New York home in the 1920s.
