A world record price for a work by Francesco Guerrieri was set at €475,064 in Dorotheum’s Old Masters Paintings sale

A group of paintings by the Caravaggisti attracted great attention at Dorotheum’s Old Master Paintings auction on the 8th June, 2021. The pictures, which reflect the technical and stylistic innovations of great painter Caravaggio, achieved outstanding hammer prices at the sale. Particularly noteworthy is the world record price of €475,064 attained by the painting Lot and His Daughters by Giovanni Francesco Guerrieri, which is the highest price achieved at auction for any work by this artist.

The wide range of buyers attending the sale, which included international museums and private institutions as well as dealers and private collectors, reflected the strong interest for the group of works by the Caravaggist painters. Artemisia Gentileschi's Judith with the servant and the head of Holofernes was secured by a major foundation for €344,900, and there was also great interest in the Portrait of a Nobelman as Aeneas by the French Caravaggist artist, Nicolas Régnier, which was sold for 235,100 euros.

Other highlights of the sale included The Abduction of Helena by Luca Penni, which reached €369,300, and the magnificent Still Life of Flowers by Roelant Savery which sold for €247,300.
