Great international Interest in Old Master Paintings at Dorotheum

Tension in the auction hall rose significantly when „The Holy Family with St Anne and the Infant St John” came up for auction. The gigantic canvas (221 x 152 cm) of excellent provenance, incl. the collection of the Dukes of Marlborough, was eventually knocked down for 503,030 Euro to a bidder personally attending the auction of old master paintings on 9th April 2014.

Several still lifes attracted particular attention that same evening, such as „Still life of game, fruit, lobster, and vegetables“ (€ 171,100) or a “Bouquet of Flowers” by Jan van Kessel I., which went to a buyer from Switzerland for 232,100 Euro. One of the flowers depicted is a tulip of the „Semper Augustus“ type, inflated trade of which once contributed the world’s first stock market crash during the so-called “Tulipomania”.
Masterpieces of Italian painting became the subject of some intense bidding, including Antonio Joli’s view of the ruined Forum Romanum, which during the 18th century served as a cow pasture:  The „Campo Vaccino“ in Rome was finally sold to a British bidder for 244,200 Euro.
