There was a breath-taking bidding war at Dorotheum during the Old Master Paintings sale on 9th November, 2022 as a bidder in the room competed with a buyer on the telephone for a Madonna and Child by the great Venetian Renaissance painter, Giovanni Bellini and Assistant. The work finally went under the hammer for a sensational 1,402 million euros.
The picture, which has a prestigious art historical provenance, is painted with the subtle colours and innovative light effects typical of the Venetian master and perfectly illustrates Bellini's ground-breaking naturalistic style.
