Dorotheum's already extensive range of auction categories has just gained a new and important facet. From now on, extra-European art and tribal art will be offered at auction at Vienna's Palais Dorotheum. The expert in charge of the new category is Prof. Erwin Melchardt, who will be available for expert consultation and auction consignment on alternate Monday mornings as well as by arrangement. The first such auction will take place in April 2011.

"Tribal art" is an indispensible part of the range offered by an auction house with a global outlook. International demand for objects created by the peoples of Africa, Indonesia, Asia, Australia, North- and South America is steadily increasing and prices for first-rate objects can reach seven digits.

In Erwin Melchardt Dorotheum gains a renowned expert of „tribal art“. Now 66, he has been working as an art critic for over 40 years, is an active collector of extra-European art and tribal art, and a court-accredited expert. For the past eight years, the trained ethnologist has been lecturing on the subject at the Vienna Academy of Applied Art and he currently holds the position of president of the Friends of Ethnology Society (Verein der Freunde der Völkerkunde).
