"SELECTED BY PHILIP HOHENLOHE"

Interior designer Hohenlohe arrays paintings, furniture, and décor at the Dorotheum auction on 2nd March 2017.

Looking back to see where one is going: „Classic design, classic architecture, studying the humanities: Perhaps we need to look at what lies behind us to connect to our roots", is how designer Philip Hohenlohe put it in his preface to the catalogue for the auction „selected by Philip Hohenlohe“ to be held at Dorotheum on 2nd March 2017.

Handsome proportions
Symmetry, harmony, fine proportions in general, a cosiness that goes beyond the principles of the Biedermeier is what the interior design expert proposes in place of the conformist purism he abhors. Instead, he employs illumination and colour to create comfort zones composed of Dorotheum auction lots from 19th century Historism, Bauhaus and Art Deco designs, and other decorative objects, to create a new coherent whole. This eclecticism, for example, draws on Bakelite crystal models as well as – a new addition compared to the first auction of this kind in 2011 – Hohenlohe's own lamp-, chair-, and table designs.

Atmo-Spheres
Salon settings "a la Visconti" is what the former film student and production designer has in mind. Nor do these interiors depend on a large budget, another aspect that Philip Hohenlohe emphasises. Estimates for the approximately 200 auction objects range between 300 and 20,000 Euro.

„Why is something considered vulgar or elegant? Why do we view something as beautiful or ugly? What is kitsch, and why?" Such questions have engaged Philip Hohenlohe throughout his entire career. Hohenlohe's spatial concepts offer an opportunity to take a new look at fundamental issues of aesthetics, to be inspired – and to join in the bidding.
