TOP PRICE FOR KLIMT DRAWING

520,000 euros for a study for the painting ‘Judith II’ at the Modern Art auction on 22 May 2024

A drawing by Gustav Klimt from around 1908 reached €520,000, one of the highest prices ever paid for comparable works by this world-famous artist, at Dorotheum’s Modern Art sale on 22 May 2024. The study for the painting Judith II went to a telephone bidder. Bids for Egon Schiele’s expressive chalk drawing Two Women reached an outstanding 234,000 euros.

The multi-layered portrait Silene by the Spanish-French artist Francis Picabia, created in the 1930s, was knocked down at 481,000 euros, far exceeding expectations.

Among Austrian artists, Alfons Walde (e.g. Einsame Hausung, €247,000), Carl Moll and Max (Mopp) Oppenheimer were especially popular. Alexej Jawlensky, Henri Lebasque, Edward Cucuel, Wols, Giacomo Manzù and Giorgio de Chirico also saw hefty bids
