Climbing bids at Dorotheum’s Contemporary Art auction on 27 November 2019


There were numerous high climbing bids at the Contemporary Art auction on 27 November 2019 at Dorotheum.

Piero Manzoni's "Achrome" from 1959/1960 led the sale by achieving 735,300 Euros. A gestural artwork by Japanese painter Kazuo Shiraga fetched an outstanding 511,259 Euros. Works by the Italian modernist pioneer Lucio Fontana attracted attention. 442,500 Euros for "Theatre" a "Concetto Spaziale (Teatrino)", meant an exceptional result. Whereas a piece of jewellery based on his typical spatial images, the bracelet "Ellisse" from 1967 rose from 15,000 Euros to a sensational 125,300 Euros!

Austrian art was well positioned in the international arena. Works by Arnulf Rainer, who will celebrate his 90th birthday this December, were particularly coveted, including "Kreuz" and "Hell" which sold for 190,321 and 176,949 Euros respectively. At 198,500 Euros, Dorotheum received a top result for a very early piece by Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
