CONTEMPORARY ART REFLECTS STRENGTH AT DOROTHEUM

Top prices at Dorotheum auction November 25th, 2020

There was great interest from international buyers in Part I of the Contemporary Art auction on November 25th 2020, with a large number of bidders participating in the sale on the telephone and via live on-line bidding.

The highest prices of the evening went to works by protagonists of the Italian avant-garde of the 1960s, Pittura Oggetto and Arte Povera. A work in metal by Jannis Kounellis achieved 344,900 euros. Lucio Fontana's ceramic Deposizione of 1954/56 reached 259,500 euros and, for his blue Concetto Spaziale from 1967/1968, the bids climbed up to 552,300 euros.

Among the numerous lots to reach over the 100,000 euros mark were works by Hans Hartung, Enrico Castellani, Alberto Burri, Piero Dorazio, Antoni Tàpies, Pierre Alechinsky, Armand Pierre Fernandez, Andy Warhol, Peter Halley, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Yayoi Kusama and Lee Ufan.

Austrian art saw particularly strong results in an international environment, with works by artists such as Rudolf Hausner, Wolfgang Hollegha, Alfons Schilling, Arnulf Rainer, Maria Lassnig and Arik Brauer doing extremely well. Franz West's Paßstück Bl 4, which was exhibited at the 1990 Venice Biennale, made an outstanding 216,800 euros
